Oreste Pezzi

I am a researcher at the Institute for Plasma Science and Technology (ISTP) of the Italian National Research Council. My research activity mainly focuses on the study of basic, space, and astrophysical plasmas by means of massively-parallelized, high-resolution numerical simulations of different theoretical models, ranging from MagnetoHydroDynamic to fully-kinetic ones. I am in particular interested in describing the characteristics of turbulence and the property of energy dissipation and plasma heating in nearly-collisionless plasmas, where the entire six-dimensional phase space is significant in determining the plasma dynamics. Recently, I became fascinated by the complex dynamics of very energetic particles, e.g. cosmic rays, in turbulent astrophysical environments as the interstellar medium, and, in particular, by the interplay between these particles with the background plasma.
I achieved my Ph.D. at the University of Calabria (Italy) in 2017, with a thesis devoted to studying collisional effects in weakly-collisional plasmas. Before being a researcher at ISTP, I have been a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Calabria and at the Gran Sasso Science Institute.
