Laboratories are available in Milano to foster ISTP multidisciplinary expertise:
The linear device GyM (Gyrotron Machine) allows experimental studies of plasma-material interaction producing and sustaining a high-reproducible steady-state magnetron plasma, with particle fluxes relevant for the tokamak first-wall. The parameters space will be extended by using a gyrotron source (28 GHz).
ISTP relies on GyM to strengthen its educational role for the integration of young researchers into the European Fusion Programme, in collaboration with the University of Milano-Bicocca.
In the Microwave laboratory we perform electromagnetic characterization of passive components at millimeter wavelengths. It is equipped with a Vector Network Analyzer for the measurements in anechoic chamber of antennas radiation pattern and 4S-parameters over the 10 - 200 GHz range.
The Bolometry laboratory conducts the characterization and test of millimeter-wave bolometers for high power measurements.
The laboratory is equipped with advanced instrumentation to test specific components of the dummy loads, like the water cooling circuit.
In the Gamma ray and neutron spectroscopy laboratory we develop gamma-ray and neutron spectroscopy detectors (silicon, diamond and gas detectors) are tested with X-ray and gamma sources.
Detectors are prepared for exploitation on larger facilities such as fusion devices or thermal-neutron sources. The laboratory allows sensors integration and optimization of data acquisition systems.
The Cold plasma laboratory is dedicated to plasma processing of material surfaces, especially for fusion applications, and to the deposition of thin films by means of capacitive RF (13.56 MHz) plasma reactors.
The Surface analysis laboratory analyses roughness, morphology and chemical of material surfaces.
It is equipped with a home-made spectrometer for X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Auger Spectroscopy (AES), Ion scattering Spectroscopy (ISS), Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy (EELS) and Ultraviolet Photoelectron Spectroscopy (UPS), a spectrometer for Thermal Desorption Spectroscopy (TDS) and a spectrometer for Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy (SIMS), a mechanical profilometer and an Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) and a plasma system based on a DC microtorch.
