In a world increasingly facing new challenges at the forefront of plasma scientific research and technological innovation, CNR and ISTP pledge progress and achieve an impact in the integration of research into societal practices and policy

National Centre for HPC, Big Data and Quantum Computing – HPC

The Center conducts R&D, nationally and internationally, for innovation in high-performance computing, simulations, and big data analytics. This aim is pursued through a state-of-the-art infrastructure for high-performance computing and big data management, which leverages existing resources and integrates emerging technologies, and an organization and distribution of activities based on the Hub and Spoke model. While the Hub focuses on management and coordination, the 11 Spokes that make up the Center are dedicated to the implementation, optimization and enhancement of the infrastructure (Spoke 0), as well as research and development in 10 different thematic areas of strategic interest to the country.

ISTP CONTRIBUTION AND GOALS:

The research topics and lines: 1. WP1 - Flagship codes; 2. WP2 - Big data generation and harnessing; 3. WP3 - Accuracy and reliability; WP4 - Pilot applications; WP5 - Materials foundry.

The Spoke 7 goals are:

  • Strengthen the Italian leadership in the development, implementation, maintenance, and free dissemination of software technologies for the multi-scale simulation of materials and molecular systems;
  • Optimize and enhance the scope of existing high-performance computer codes;
  • Enable the optimal access to the HPC infrastructure of the National Centre;
  • Steer the efforts of Italian materials and molecular modelling communities towards the key enabling technologies identified by the PNRR.

An accurate description of processes occurring under conditions similar to those of a cold plasma can only be obtained using multiscale models. Such models require a large amount of atomic and molecular data. The latter are produced in ISTP-Bari by using state-to-state models both for collisions in gas- phase and at the wall.
